Frequently Asked Questions  —  < BACK

What can I expect when I arrive at UUFS?
We strive to make first time visitors welcome. A member of the congregation will greet you and take you to the Welcome Table. Our members wear nametags and you will be offered one, along with an Order of Service that describes what will be happening that day. You will have the opportunity before or after the service to give us your contact information so that we can keep you informed of activities in the congregation. You will also be offered a variety of materials to get to know us better, including a DVD, pamphlets, a newsletter and a list of upcoming events.
What can I expect in the service?
Services vary from Sunday to Sunday. The music includes hymns, choir presentations, or other music provided by members and friends. Most services have a sermon or homily presented by our minister, a member or a guest speaker.
What do people wear for the service?
You will find a range of dress from jeans and tee shirts to dresses and sport coats.
Are children welcome at the service?
Yes! Families with children are welcome. Early in the service there is usually a children’s story, after which most children choose to participate in children’s religious education class. Those children who wish to stay with their parents for the whole service are welcome to do so. Parents of toddlers are welcome to take advantage of our professionally staffed nursery.
How can I get acquainted with members of the congregation?
After Sunday service there is an informal coffee and conversation time in front of the chapel. In addition there are informal discussion groups, a men’s group, religious education classes for adults, and committees that address fellowship needs. Participation is a great way to get to know us.
How can I learn more about Unitarian Universalism?
There are many resources available on the web. A good start is the Unitarian Universalist Association Visitor's page at www.uua.org/visitors/index.shtml . Various books on the subject include “A Chosen Faith,” a good introduction. (A synopsis can be found at Amazon.) Our fellowship periodically offers classes on the subject.
