May 4, 2008 – “Annual Flower Communion”

On June 4, 1923, Norbert Capek (1870- 1942) introduced this special service to the Unitarian church he founded in Czechoslovakia. “The significance of the flower communion is that as no two flowers are alike, so no two people are alike, yet each has a contribution to make…Exchanging flowers, we show our willingness to walk together in our search for truth, disregarding all that might divide us. Each person takes home a flower brought by someone else - thus symbolizing our shared celebration in community.” Please bring a flower to share.
Rev. Vicky Combs, preaching.

May 11, 2008 – “Julia’s Voice: Rescuing Mother’s Day from Hallmark”

In 1870, following the carnage of the U.S. civil war and prior to the Franco-Prussian conflict escalating into full blown war, Julia Ward Howe, abolitionist, suffragette, and poet, famous for having authored the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” organized a Mothers’ Day for Peace. These origins have long been lost in the mists of greeting card banality. However, returning Mothers’ Day to its original meaning could bring up some thorny issues with our mothers, could it not? Ah, when the voice of conscience meets the complexities of Mom.
Rev. Vicky Combs, preaching.

May 18, 2008 – “Good Heavens! Spiritual Themes in the Cinema”

The cinema has provided us with many moving spiritual segments, often nestled within otherwise secular films. In this reflective service, Gary shows us five 5-minute film segments on the large plasma TV, including one for the children. We will pause after each for silent reflection or for singing the song performed on screen. The choir also sings.
Gary Hartz, speaking.

Join in a solemn recollection of those who have died in wars past and present. If you have lost a loved one to war you are invited to bring a photo or other memento.
