Welcome Newcomer
Thank you for visiting the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Sunnyvale, California (UUFS) website. Please stop by and let us welcome you at UUFS too.
Visitor Orientation with the Minister
Periodically, the minister holds a Newcomers’ Orientation for visitors. The orientation will be listed on the Sunday Services page.
The session starts about 30 minutes after the service ends and lasts an hour.
Please enjoy refreshments and conversation outside the chapel while you wait. The minister will make an announcement there and lead people to the meeting location.
Child care is provided; please let an usher know before the service.
What To Expect on Sunday
On Arriving At Our Meeting Place
- You will be greeted at the door of the chapel by an usher.
- The usher will give you a printed Order of Service.
- Just inside the door is our Welcome Table,
where you will be invited to fill out a short information form and be given
a name tag.
- Brochures and the UUFS newsletter are also available at the Welcome
Table.
- It’s best to come a bit early, but if you arrive after the service has begun, an usher
will give you an Order of Service and point out an empty seat for you.
- Weekly
attendance ranges from 80 to 110 adults and children.
Attire on Sunday depends on individual preference
- Adults wear a variety of styles ranging from comfortable
casual to Sunday best attire.
- Children wear clothes for active participation in hands-on
classroom activities and for playing outdoors on the playground.
Childcare and Religious Education
- We have a professional child care provider who can greet you before the service and show you where we care for infants and toddlers during the service.
- Most children begin in the chapel and depart with adults after the first 20 minutes for activities led by professional and volunteer leaders.
- Parents are welcome to go with them or to keep them in the worship service if they feel more comfortable there.
- Please look at our For Families page for more information
about childcare and other youth programs.
The Service
- Our Sunday worship service lasts approximately an hour and is designed to connect us with our deepest sense of self, each other, and that which we hold most sacred in our lives.
- The service is filled with inspirational music & messages, from both laity and minister, simple rituals such as the lighting of the flaming chalice, the symbol of Unitarian Universalism, and periods of both silent and musical meditation.
After the Service Refreshments and Conversation
- Newcomers are invited to stay after the service for refreshments and conversation.
- There are information tables, volunteer tables, a book cart to purchase CDs of sermons or books about Unitarian Universalist heritage and identity, social issues, and spiritual practices.
- Often there will be a group discussion about the sermon or an adult enrichment program on various topics.
- Parents and guardians meet their children about 15 minutes after the service
ends. In nice weather, you may find them supervised on the playground behind
the classroom building.
